What Size Solar System Does My Home Need?

Sizing is not about your house — it is about your appliances, your peak load and how many hours of backup you actually want.

The most common question we hear is some version of “what size solar do I need for a three-bedroom flat?” It is a reasonable question with an unsatisfying answer: the building tells us very little. Two identical flats can need systems that differ by a factor of three.

What matters is the appliance list. A home running two inverter air conditioners, a borehole pump and a chest freezer has a completely different load profile from one running fans, lights and a television. Air conditioning and pumps also create surge demand, which drives inverter selection independently of daily energy use.

Sizing therefore has three separate answers: how much energy you consume in a day (kWh), how much power you draw at your worst moment (kW or kVA), and how many hours you want to ride through without sun or grid. Solar array, inverter and battery each answer one of those questions.

Once you have a rough appliance inventory, an estimate becomes straightforward. From there, our engineers verify the numbers with a short assessment — measuring actual draw rather than nameplate ratings, which are usually conservative in one direction and misleading in the other.
